200 Private Univerversities Pending approval- NUC

The number of universities in Nigeria may grow further if the 200 applications from private individuals pending before the National Universities Commission are approved.
This was made known by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Abubakar Rasheed during a meeting with federal universities bursars in Abuja.
All together, there are 153 universities in Nigeria. A breakdown of the number shows that 40 are federal universities, 45 are state owned universities and 68 are private.
It is on record that many aspiring students are not able to make it to these universities yearly due to lack of space.
According to Mr Rasheed “the university system is growing” but adds that “NUC is concerned about the sanctity, quality, and integrity of degrees acquired by the students,”
